Lady Hornets Hold Off Pine Bluff

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Steered by Britney Wright's 20 points and 11 rebounds, Alabama State subdued Arkansas-Pine Bluff 72-63 onMondayevening at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

Alabama State (4-9, 2-2 SWAC), off the heels of their monstrous 50-point victory over Mississippi Valley, strung together its second straight conference win by defeatingArkansas Pine Bluff (3-9, SWAC 0-3).

ASU's balanced offense scored from all areas of the court made 24-of-29 (82%)from the free throw line,andscored30 points within the paint.

"I thought we did a really good job at both ends of the floor, we held them to 24 points in the first half and we executed our offense," said Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.

"Britney Wright did a good job inside the paint.JP (Jasmine Peeples) and (Daniele) Ewert did great for us today."

Ewert scored 13 points off Alabama State's bench which outscored Pine Bluff's bench 31-16.

Pine-Bluff opened up the third quarter scoring out the gate going a 9-2 run until being quieted by a Ewert 3-pointer that sparked an ASU 8-1 run to rise to 48-34 lead.

After only scoring only 12 points in each of the first two quarters, Pine Bluff outscoredASU21-17in the third.

"We allowed their (Pine Bluff) guards into the paint far too many times causing our bigs to get into foul trouble," said Coach Freeman-Jackson.

The leading scorers of the game for Pine Bluff were guards Ajia Richardson with 17 points and Destiny Brewton with 14 points.

However, ASU continued to led at the end of third quarter at 56-45.

"We played great but I thought we didn't do a great job in the second half, especially on the defensive end. I believed they scored 38 points in the half," Freeman-Jackson said. "That wasn't our best effort on the defensive end. We had too many breakdowns. We have to do a better job of playing two halves."

The Lady Hornets went going on two impressive 10-4 and 9-2 runs to extend their lead going into the half up 39-24.

ASU'soffense attacked from inside and out and pounded the ball inside to score 20 of the 39 first half points within the paint.

At halftime,Wright led with 12 points. Off the bench, Ewert added eight points, while Durriya Sampson scored seven.

ASU's swarming defense held Pine-Bluff 0-5 from behind the arc and causedeightturnovers in the first half.

Alabama State will return to the court this Saturdayat3:00 p.m.when they face in-state opponent Alabama A&M in a SWAC rivalry at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

"We have a huge gameon Saturday against our rival Alabama A&M," said Coach Freeman-Jackson.

"Fans should expect both teams to really give their all this Saturday.Season records won't matter this weekend.

"You can throw the records out. It'sabout bragging rights. It's about representing Alabama State," said Coach Freeman-Jackson.
