Britney Wright's 24 points led the Alabama State charge over in-state rival Alabama A&M 86-50, additionally joining the 1000
th point club Saturday afternoon at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
Alabama State (5-9, 3-2 SWAC), successfully extended its winning streak to three while also earning their third victory with a margin of 15 points or more.
On the opening score of the game on a drive through the paint, Durriya Shields-Sampson passed the ball back out to Wright for a 3-pointer becoming the 10th player in ASU women's basketball history to score 1000 career points. An accomplishment last achieved by Shameka Jackson.
The swarming defense of the Lady Hornets derailed A&M's offense to two points for most of the fourth quarter and game-low eight points in the entire quarter.
The Lady Hornets restricted A&M's leading scorer and fifth leading scorer in the SWAC Janie Myles, who averages 14.9 points per game to just a season-tying low four points.
"We pushed up the pressure on the defensive end and it has proven to be very successful," said Head Coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson.
Coach Freeman-Jackson's high-octane offense prompted A&M's player to missing several defensive assignments which led to Alexis DeBose and Deborah Martian to fouling out the game.
Daniele Ewert's 13 points led ASU's bench, which scored 40 points. Starting center
Jasmine Peeples added five points and 10 rebounds.
Tempers flared in the middle of the court during the opening minute of the second half between Shields-Sampson and A&M's Jaylan Snowden.
Shields-Sampson received a flagrant one technical foul however A&M's Snowden received a flagrant two technical foul and was ejected from the game.
ASU's defense limited A&M severely in the first half which resulted in a 49-30 lead going into halftime.
Off the bench,
Kayla Tucker blazed A&M's defense from deep scorching them for 11 points while connecting on three 3-pointers.
While A&M's Ebony Johnson and Brooke Dixon produced a team-high of eight points each in the first half, ASU regulated A&M to 0-4 beyond the arch while causing 15 first half turnovers.
"It all started on the defensive end," said Freeman-Jackson.
While ASU shot an impressive 17-31 (54.8%) with 14 of those shots being assisted, in addition to netting 8-11 (72.7) from deep.
ASU started the game on a bombardment going on a 14-0 run within the opening five minutes of the game and eventually had a 20-2 lead.
An early run was highlighted by Wright, connecting on three 3-pointers and scoring 11 points.
The Lady Hornets now lead the series 29-21 over Alabama A&M.
Alabama State will return to the court on the road in Baton Rouge, LA as they face SWAC opponent Southern University in at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
