Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

ASU Falls in SWAC Opener at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. – Bobby Brown scored 18 points and Jamel Waters added 11, but it was not enough as the Hornets fell to Jackson State 68-61 to open the Southwestern Athletic Conference men's basketball season.

"Bad offense and just bad defense," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "We could not get into our offense at all and then we let them get an offensive rebound when they were only up by one there late in the game and they hit a three at the shot clock buzzer.  We just didn't do much good in anything tonight."

ASU (5-8/0-1) had another cold shooting night only shooting 32 percent from the field.  They hit seven of their 21 three point attempts for 33 percent, but struggled at the free throw line only hitting 16 of 29 for 55 percent.

"Bad free throw shooting," Jackson said.  "We had the score down to one and two a couple of times and then missed the free throws.  Give Jackson credit, but we had our chances to win this game and we just didn't get it done."

JSU (6-8/1-0) came into the game the SWAC's leader in rebounding and in scoring.  ASU held the host four points under their scoring average and out rebounded the Tigers 42-41.  Tony Armstrong had a team-high eight rebounds to lead ASU.

JSU shot 47 percent from the field with Chace Franklin scoring a game-high 21 points.  Raeford Worsham added 18.  JSU's leading scorer Paris Collins was held to seven points, but his three point field goal as the shot clock was going off with 22 seconds left gave JSU a 67-61 lead.

A cold shooting first half contributed to the Hornets 31-26 deficit as Jackson was able to shoot 43 percent.  Franklin led the way for the Tigers with 14 first half points.  Bolden came off the bench to score six.

Waters had 10 first-half points to lead the Hornets scoring efforts.  ASU only hit two of their 12 three point field goals and were six of 10 from the free throw line.

ASU will continue the conference-opening road trip at Grambling State Monday Jan. 4.  The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
