GRAMBLING, La. – Steve Rogers had a season-high 19 points to lead five ASU players in double digits, but it was not enough as Alabama State fell 84-81 in overtime at Grambling State. Â
"Well we just have to play better defense," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "We scored 81 points and we did not get it done. When you come on the road you have to play tougher and finish at the rim and we did not do that."
Â
ASU (5-10/0-2) led the entire game until the 1:21 mark when GSU took the lead. From there the two teams battled until with six seconds left
Jamel Waters went baseline to baseline and laid the ball in to send the game into overtime.
Â
In overtime GSU outscored ASU 13-10 to pull out the win.
Â
It was a close game all around, except at the free throw line where the home team shot 55 free throws to ASU's 24. While the Hornets hit 19 of their free throws for 79 percent, they could not make up the difference as GSU hit 35.
Â
Jamel Waters scored 14 points before fouling out with three minutes left in the game.Â
Bobby Brown and
Corvon Butler scored 12 points and
Torloft Thomas scored 10.
Â
"We are just not tough enough around the basket," Jackson said. "We had several chances around the basket and just didn't play strong enough to finish plays. We have to get strong and more physical around the basket."
Â
GSU's (4-9/2-0) Remond Brown scored a game-high 23 points. Deonte Hearns, Mark Gray and Nigel Riberio all scored 14 points.
Â
The Hornets came out on fire to open the game hitting their first eight shots on their way to building an early 20-12 lead and went on to lead 43-29 entering the locker room. They finished the first half shooting 45 percent from the field and hit five of 11 three point field goals.
Â
Rogers had a solid first half scoring 12 points to lead ASU offense. Thomas came off the bench to score seven and Butler and Waters scored six.
Â
The host stayed in the game at the free throw line where they hit 15 of 21 first half free throws. They shot 32 percent from the field with Mark Gray coming off the bench to score a team-high eight points.
Â
The Hornets will host their first SWAC game of the season Saturday, Jan. 9 when they host Mississippi Valley State at 5:30 p.m.
