This will be the 73
rd meeting between the Lady Hornets and the Jaguars. Southern owns a 39-33 series lead over the Alabama State.
ASU will enter tomorrow's game with a 5-9 overall record and are 3-2 in conference play. The Lady Hornets picked up a big 86-50 conference win over Alabama A&M last Saturday. Alabama State would have been off almost a week when they play Southern. The last time these two teams met was on March 14, 2015 in Houston, Texas for the SWAC Championship crown. Alabama State defeated SU 73-55 to become the 2015 SWAC Champs.
"This is going to be a huge challenge for us, because we have not won on the road thus far this year in the SWAC," said head women's basketball coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson. "Any time you go to Baton Rouge, you know that this will be a tough team to try to beat at their home place. With our girls coming off of three consecutive wins should really have them ready to do the job. Their confidence is up and they understand the magnitude of this game. If we take care of business right here, this should put us in second place. We just really need to pay attention to detail."
SWAC Player of the Week junior
Britney Wright has been holding the team down in scoring and in rebounding. She is averaging 14.3 points per game and contributing 7.4 rpg on the season.
Daniele Ewert, who is averaging 7.5 points per game, is second on the team in scoring.
Southern will come into Saturday's match-up with a 8-7 overall record and are 5-1 in the SWAC, bringing in a 99-36 win over Mississippi Valley. Britney Washington led Southern with 13 points against Valley and is leading the Jaguars in scoring averaging 14.0 points per game after only six games. Briana Green leads the squad in rebounding with a 5.3 average per contest. She is second on the team in scoring averaging 9.5 ppg.
"We are going to have to play good defense, because all of their girls can score," Freeman-Jackson said. "Any of their five girls that they put on the floor you are really going to have to pay attention to all them at any point. Normally there are only two players that you have to keep an eye on and contain, but Southern has a balanced team. So we are going have to play good defense and make sure we execute on the other end."
