Box Score After a
Jasmine Peeples jumper and the last three minutes expired, Alabama State and Southern stayed tied at 51 to take both teams into overtime.  The Lady Hornets was able to edge Southern by one in the extra period for the 60-59 win.

"This was a huge win for us today," said head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson.  "We haven't beaten this team at here in their gym since 2009.  This was a great win for our girls and I thought we made plays down the stretch, when we needed to.  I thought we did a really good job making stops."

ASU contained a one point lead with 8:01 on the clock, but a bucket by Southern's Miaya Crowder gave them a one point edge (48-47).  Southern then took a three point advantage, holding ASU scoreless for the next three minutes.
Daniele Ewert sent SU's Briana Green to the free throw line. A miss gave
Britney Wright a defensive rebound to allow
Ashanti Spencer a layup, putting the Lady Hornets down by one.  Peeples hit the last jumper in regulation sending the two teams in overtime.

Spencer finished with 15 points leading the Lady Hornets. The win was the first overtime win for the Lady Hornets this season, moving them to 6-9, 4-2, while Southern (8-8, 5-2) dropped their second SWAC game of the season.

Alabama State struck first in overtime with a basket by Spencer, and two more free throws by Wright.  The Jaguars responded with a bucket by Green to put Southern within two (55-53).  The Lady Hornets continued to run its course as Wright placed a bucket in the basket advancing the Lady Hornets to a four point lead.  Cortnei Purnell slipped in a quick lay-up to put Southern within two.   For the last two minutes in overtime neither teams scored.  With 12 seconds left, Southern's Britney Washington hit a lay-up. The Lady Hornets didn't roll over as Tashi-ana Thompson sent
Durriya Shields-Sampson to the free throw line sinking both to close out the game.

"Durriya stepped up and made some huge free throws and prior to those she had missed two," Freeman-Jackson said.  "I know her nerves were bad and she stepped right in. This is the value of having leadership. She's a graduate-student and there is no substitute for someone who has experience."

Shields-Sampson had a season high of 11 points. Both Wright and Peeples added nine points apiece.  Peeples led on the boards with 14 rebounds to lead both teams. She also had three blocks to give her 27 so far this season.

Southern's Green led the team in scoring with 16, while Washington had 14 points and four rebounds.

The Lady Hornets will return to the floor to face the Braves of Alcorn State on Monday, January 25 for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
