LORMAN, Miss. – Alabama State continues to have trouble getting over the hump as they fell 77-72 at Alcorn State. It is ASU sixth conference loss and another close loss for the Hornets.

"We have to get a stop," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "We are right there and we play defense for 20 seconds and then can't make the stop when we needed too."

Alcorn State (8-11/6-2) literally could not miss, especially in the second half where they shot 71 percent from the field. The Braves came into the game one of the worse shooting teams in the conference only shooting 39 percent from the field, and even worse from beyond the three point line at 28 percent.

In tonight's game Alcorn finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field and hit six of seven threes in the second half alone and hit eight of 15 attempts.

Alcorn also was shooting 65 percent from the free throw line, but tonight they hit 23 of 27 for 85 percent.

ASU (6-13/1-6) just couldn't keep up with the Braves shooting. ASU shot 40 percent from the field and only hit four of their 13 three point attempts.

ASU hit 24 of their 29 free throws for 83 percent, but it was not enough to outscore the hot-shooting Braves.

Jamel Waters led ASU with a game-high 22 points to go along with four assists and four steals.Â
Torloft Thomas had 12 and
Bobby Brown had 13.

The Hornets only tuned the ball over eight times compared to 12 for Alcorn State and ASU out rebounded the host 33-32.

Tamarico Wilson led Alcorn with 20 points. He was joined in double digits by Patrick Owenu with 13, Devonte Hampton 12, Reginald Johnson with 11 and Octavius Brown with 10.

The Hornets trailed 33-28 at halftime as Alcorn was able to take advantage of their inside game scoring 12 points in the paint with Onwenu doing most of the damage scoring nine first-half points. Wilson also had nine and Davis came off the bench to score seven.

The Hornets only shot 35 percent from the field with Waters leading ASU's offensive effort with 10 points.

"The guys are playing hard and are competitive every game," Jackson said. "They are not getting discouraged because they know how close we are. We are going to continue to work hard and get ready for Texas Southern next Saturday."

The Hornets will be back home Saturday, Jan. 30 when they host Texas Southern at 5 p.m.
