Over the Next four Days the Lady Hornets will Host UAB, UAPB, GSU

The Alabama State Lady Hornets volleyball team will return to the court as they host conference USA team the UAB Blazers for a midweek nonconference match at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night. They will continue play on Friday (Oct. 21) and Saturday (Oct. 22) against Arkansas Pine Bluff and Grambling in SWAC play.

Over the weekend, Alabama State (12-7, 9-0 SWAC) claimed its 11th straight win of the season behind the impressive play of junior Briana Dorsey.  In Saturday's game, Dorsey put away 14 kills with her third game with a .700 or above hitting percentage.  She also had five blocks giving her a total 63 blocks on the season (15 solo, 48 assisted blocks).  Senior Jamie Coleman guided State's defense, averaging 5.75 digs per set in the 3-1 win over Alabama A&M.

"I don't think we played our best against Alabama A&M," said head coach Penny Lucas White.  "Probably all that time off hurt us, but I am pleased that the ladies found a way to win,"

This game will mark the 21st game between the two teams with UAB (9-14, 2-6 C-USA) leading the series 15-5.  Last season ASU was able to hang on to take a 3-2 win over the Blazers.

"Playing UAB last season at their place and we were down two sets and to come and win was very good," Lucas White said.  "It was milestone for us and you better believe that UAB is coming in here tomorrow to get revenge.  We are going to have to be game ready and I think the girls are and I am just glad that we are back on the court touching the ball."

The Lady Hornets will turn around and play host to Arkansas Pine Bluff (4-12, 4-5 SWAC) on Friday for a 7 p.m. matchup.  Then closeout the week with a 5 p.m. set against Grambling State (5-10, 3-6 SWAC) on Saturday.

This will mark the second go round of the season as ASU will face the Lady Golden Lions after defeating them in Little Rock 3-0 and Grambling at their place with a 3-0 victory over the Lady Tigers.

"Although we have seen both these teams earlier this season, they have improved some," said Lucas-White.  "We know that we have a target on our backs and teams are going to try to come in to take us out.  We have to play our game and be ready for the challenge."

Tomorrow night is slated as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night.  Friday is Kids Clubs Night (Volleyball is inviting all volleyball clubs and boys and girls clubs around Montgomery).  Saturday will be trick or treat night where we are asking all kids big or small to dress in their favorite costume as the team will hand out candy to their trick or treater's.

Live stats will be available on bamastatesports.com for all home games this week.
