ATLANTA, Ga. – The Alabama State women's basketball team didn't come away with a victory, but they continued to play hard and finished by outscoring Georgia Tech in the final quarter as it dropped Sunday's afternoon contest 70-48 at McCamish Pavilion.Â
"We were sluggish," said ASU head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson.
Â
"I thought our seniors
Britney Wright and
Daniele Ewert were able to get acclimated to the game. Between the two of them, they had the first 18 points. We have to do a better job of trying to control the tempo of the game. I don't think we did a good job of executing offensively nor did we do a good job on the defensive end. We have some young girls that have to understand the pace of the game and how hard they need to play. They're not playing at a level that is suitable for defending the crown or to have any type of success. We have to do a better job of creating points from 50/50 balls."
Georgia Tech carried a 35-21 lead into halftime and extended to lead to 23 points by the end of the third quarter.
Alabama State outscored the Yellow Jackets 16-15 in the final quarter.
Wright led the Lady Hornets with a game-high 16 points, nine rebounds and one block while Ewert provided 15 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Â
The rest of the Lady Hornets combined to score just 17 points.Â
ASU was foiled by 30 team fouls and 24 turnovers.Â
The Lady Hornets continue their road swing on Tuesday at Savannah State at 7 p.m. followed by a Thursday visit to Southern Mississippi at 6 p.m. before returning home to host Mobile on Friday at 8 p.m. from the Acadome.Â
"Savannah State always prepares us for the SWAC," Freeman-Jackson added.Â
"That's why I like playing them. They run a great system.  They play hard. We will have to make some adjustments because it's a different type of basketball, but it will give us an indication of where we are and where we need to go."
