Lady Hornets advance to fourth straight SWAC Championship

JACKSON, Miss. – Make it four straight for the Alabama State women's volleyball team.

The Lady Hornets are headed back to the SWAC Championship for a fourth consecutive season after yet another straight sets victory.

This time, it came against No. 4 seed Alabama A&M by the scores of 25-18, 25-14, 25-17 Saturday afternoon at the Williams Assembly Center in a SWAC Tournament semifinal played in Jackson, Miss.

Next, top-seeded Alabama State (23-8 overall) takes on No. 2 Texas Southern in the title match on Sunday at 3 p.m.

TSU defeated No. 3 Southern in straight sets in the other semifinal.

Alabama State won the SWAC title in 2013 after defeating Alabama A&M and repeated as champions in 2014 by defeating Southern.

In 2015, ASU reached the championship match, but was defeated by Jackson State.

The Lady Hornets remained red hot, having won 22 of their last 23 matches, and 11th consecutive overall.

Alabama State has been fiercely dominant against the SWAC, winning 60 of 63 sets, and improved to 20-0 versus conference opponents this season when including the SWAC Tournament.

"I'm really proud of the team," said ASU head women's volleyball coach Penny Lucas-White.

"The ladies played extremely hard. This was a great team win and we're really excited about playing for the championship tomorrow."

Alabama A&M (13-22 overall) was led by Ashundria McNeal, who had half of the team's kills with 15 on 40 total attacks.

Alabama State played more efficient as a team and hit .250 as a squad as opposed to the Lady Bulldogs, who hit just .087.

Bayle Bennett led with nine kills, Ni'yesha Brown added seven kills, Krysta Medearis accounted for six kills and Briana Dorsey chipped in with five kills.

Jamie Coleman had a team-high 11 digs while setters Justus Tuiolosega and Kori Kutsch combined for 21 assists.

Texas Southern (22-10) last made the SWAC Championship in 1994.

The Lady Tigers reached the final in each of the first six seasons of the existence of the SWAC Tournament and won four championships (1989, 1990, 1991 and 1994).
