Montgomery, Ala. – After splitting the opening four games of the season, the Alabama State University Women's Tennis had a chance to have their wins outnumber their losses as they hosted Georgia Southern University, Friday, at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
It wasn't to be however, as the Lady Hornets fell to the Eagles 5-2.
"It was a tough result seeing that score line the way it is" said Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz after the match. "We were competitive in all of our singles matches and on any other day those big points could go our way. It was a marked improvement from this fixture last year and I'm really impressed with the play of the women out there today" said Christiansz.
ASU (2-3), playing with a changed doubles line up from last week's victory over Savannah State, lost the doubles point through defeats at the one and three position with identical 6-3 score lines. The pairing of
Gabriela Lackova and
Nicole Tekelova won 6-3 at two, before the point was clinched.
"Doubles was good. We had some changes in our line up but the energy was positive and we played well but were just shy of taking the point" said Christiansz.
The loss of the doubles point seemed to spur on the Lady Hornets as they came out strong on all courts but were also facing classy opposition. Georgia Southern (3-1) took the first sets on all but one court, with freshman Lackova, the exception taking the opening set 6-2.
The Lady Hornets continued to fight as the matches progressed but losses at six, two, and four gave the Eagles the four points needed to have an unassailable lead. ASU fought back, with
Irina Cvijovic completing a comeback victory at five winning 1-6, 7-5, 10-3, and through Lackova responding after dropping the second set to prevail 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, but it was ultimately too little too late.
The women will have no time to reflect on their performance however, as they are immediately back into action on Saturday, at 10 a.m., when they play Kennesaw State University. The match will be a double header, with ASU's men's team also in action.
