TROY, Ala. – The Alabama State University women's tennis team didn't have far to travel when they drove down to Troy to face the Trojans in an in-state rival match.

The Trojans were too much for the Lady Hornets in a 5-2 contest, as ASU continues to play without the services of Marine Cartier, one of the top players on the team.

Troy (5-2) was able to break out on top with sweeping doubles play and picking up the doubles point.

After Troy pushed its lead to 2-0 with a win at two singles, ASU's Nicole Tekelova cut the lead to 2-1 with a straight sets win at six singles.

That would be as close as the Lady Hornets (3-5) would get as Troy picked up the third and fourth points with single wins at three and five.

Two of the games went three sets as ASU's Arantxia lost at one singles 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.  Patricia Regel, who missed the last game due to sickness, was able to pick up a three-set win (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) to make the final score 5-2.

"This was a good, solid effort from the women against a really good Troy team," Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said.  "We held Marine (Cartier) out while she is still nursing an injury and that hurt us, but I thought everyone stepped up and played with great energy and competed hard.  It was good to get Patricia (Regel) back on the court after missing the last match and to see her pick up a win in a tough three-set match was good for her."

"This team continues to work hard and I continue to be impressed with their dedication to get better.  Hopefully we can build on this effort and our next two matches before we head off the our first SWAC Round Up in a couple of weeks."

Both the ASU men and women will be on the road this weekend beginning with a 1 p.m. match at Alabama A&M Saturday, Feb. 20.  From there the teams will travel to Chattanooga where they will face the Chattanooga Mocs Sunday, Feb. 21.  Those matches will also begin at 1 p.m.
