MONTGOMERY, AL – The Alabama State softball team got back on the right track by sweeping day one action of their hosted Black & Gold Tournament Friday at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

Game one: ASU 6, Nicholls 2Â
Maddie Phelps pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs and struck out five while walking none and the ASU offense came alive with a four-run fifth inning to give them all they would need.

Alexis Johnson got the scoring underway with a RBI double that chased home
Aleesa Yanez.

Alexia Boggess followed in the inning with a single that scored Johnson. An error helped pinch runner
Kaylee Davis came around to score to make it 3-0.Â

Then,
Laura Aguilar added to the lead with a RBI single back up the middle.Â

The Colonels (7-2) answered back with a two-run home run by Alexis Huss in the sixth.

ASU padded their lead on another smashing hit by Johnson and an error to push the lead to 6-2.Â

Game two: ASU 3, UMBC 0In the final game of the day,
Melissa Christmann (2-3) tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out four as the Lady Hornets picked up one RBI apiece from
Jenna Mae Thorne,
Kendall Core and
Brittney Wilson.

Aguilar and Core each had two hits apiece while Aguilar earned her first stolen base of the season.Â

ASU's first game will be against Nicholls at 1:30 p.m. (approximate) followed by a 6:30 p.m. (approximate) start against Middle Tennessee.Â
