Lady Hornets Fall Late To Southern

Southern escapes the Dunn-Oliver Acadome with a narrow victory despite Britney Wright's 22 points, 11 rebounds as Alabama State falters late 57-55 Saturday afternoon ending its conference 10-game win streak.

Lady Hornets' offense stalled late in the game as they did not score in the last two minutes.

"We didn't do a good job of running our offense especially out of the (Southern full-court) press," said Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.

Briana Green led Southern with a double-double (14 points and 11 rebounds) while Miaya Crowder scored 11 and Cortnei Purnell and Britney Washington scored 10 points each.

Daniele Ewert added eight points while Jasmine Peeples only scoring three points but managed to grab 11 rebounds.

"We reverted to the way we were playing earlier in the year" Coach Freeman-Jackson.

A late 10-2 run elevated the Lady Hornets, however the Lady Jaguars promptly responded with grinding out a 12-4, tying the game at 47. A made free-throw  by Peeples in third quarter gave ASU a 33-32 lead, the first lead since their 2-0 at the start of the game.

The Lady Hornets were out of rhythm early in the game as adjustments were made due to injury suffered last this week, though ASU adatpted and rallied back multiple times.

"(Kayla) Stephens has been out all week, so she was out of sync due to a meniscus tear, which led to Spencer making  playing more minutes and taking her away from essential bench role," Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said. "We started Stephens in the second half which helped us push for the lead, which shows how important our chemistry is."

Shamyiah Smith hoisted a half-court shot to beat the buzzer drawing Alabama State to a two-point deficit trailing Southern 32-30 going into half time.

Wright led all players with 11 points and five rebounds. Danielle Clark and Smith added four points each in the first half of the game.

Crowder had nine points for Southern, while teammates Washington scored eight and Briana Green added seven points in the half.

After heavily contested deep three-point shots by Washington, Danielle Clark swiftly responded with a three-pointer of her own narrowing Southern's lead to 28-24.

The Lady Hornets began to rally back  into the game going 7-3 shorting Southern's lead 23-17  early in the second quarter.

In the first quarter, Southern took an early 20-10 lead as the Lady Hornets' shots could not find the bottom of the net. Connecting on ASU was outrebounded 13-6 in the quarter.

The Lady Hornets will not have long before they are back on the court as they will host Alcorn State at Monday, Feb. 22nd for a 5:30 p.m. C.T. SWAC match-up at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

"We still control our own destiny," said Coach Freeman-Jackson "we only have three (conference) losses, Southern has three (conference) losses and Texas Southern has two (conference) losses. We still have five games left we can't get down on ourselves, we just have to go prepare.
