Box Score MONTGOMERY, AL – The Alabama State women's basketball team grinded out a hard fought 64-51 victory over Alcorn State to end the Lady Braves four-game winning streak in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Monday night.
Â
Two Lady Hornets finished with double-doubles as
Britney Wright (13 points, 12 rebounds) and
Jasmine Peeples (12 points, 11 rebounds) worked energetically on both ends of the court.
Durriya Shields-Sampson added 13 points off the bench. ASU outrebounded Alcorn 55-41.
Â
This victory was mainly contributed to the swarming defense of the Lady Hornets, who held the Lady Braves to season-lows of 16-of-65 (24.6%) from the field and 2-of-17 (11.8%) from beyond the arch. ASU also stifled the conference-leading scoring Norianna Haynes to below her 20.1 per game average. Though Haynes finished with 16 points and six rebounds, she shot 4-of-13 and missed all three of her attempted three-pointers and was limited to just three points in the first half.
Â
In this very physical contest, tempers flared as both teams committed an astounding 23 (46 total) fouls each resulting in 28 (56 total) free-throws attempted by each team.
Â
After an Alcorn 10-5 run late in the third quarter, ASU adamantly responded by sealing the game with a slow, but steady 14-4 run over the fourth quarter.
Â
Alabama State led Alcorn 31-22 into the half after very physical two-quarters of play that accumulated 22 total fouls called.
Â
Kayla Tucker and Shields-Sampson led the Lady Hornets with six points each while Peeples added five points, five rebounds and one block. Wright had yet to make a basket but managed to make two points by free-throws and grabbed nine rebounds. Â
Â
Stellar defense by the Lady Hornets restricted the Lady Braves to shot a dismal 7-of-36 (19.4%) from the field and 1-of-10 (10%) from the three-point line in the first half.
Â
Alcorn narrowed ASU's lead by navigating a 10-6 run to trail 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Â
At the start first quarter, ASU possessed an early 12-4 lead, taking advantage of Alcorn shooting 1-of-12 (8.3%) from the field.
Â
