MOBILE - The Alabama State baseball team lost 4-3 in 10 innings at South Alabama Tuesday night at Stanky Field.
It was the second extra inning loss for the Hornets in four games this season, as ASU is still seeking its first win heading into Friday's 6 p.m. home game against Winthrop, the first of a three-game series.
Alabama State scored in the first inning for the second straight game.
Yamil Pagan, who had a career-high four hits, singled to lead off the game and advance to second on a single by
Chris Biocic. With two outs,
Ray Hernandez singled to left to score Pagan for a 1-0 lead.
South Alabama (4-0) scored two runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead before the Hornets rallied in the seventh. Eric White singled to lead off the inning, and scored on Pagan's triple to center. Pagan then scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at 3-3.
The Jaguars scored the game-winning run on a walkoff single in the 10
th. South Alabama, which came into the game averaging more than 11 runs a game, was stymied by Hornets' pitching. Starter
Hunter McIntosh allowed six hits, two runs, walked four and struck out five in 4 2/3 innings. A total of five Hornet relievers allowed just two hits over the final 4 1/3 innings.
Pagan went 4-for-5 and Hernandez 2-for-5 for the Hornets, who despite having 10 hits stranded nine runners on base.
"
Hunter McIntosh was absolutely incredible," Alabama State head coach
Mervyl Melendez said. "He pitched really well, and could have gotten out of the inning if we make a defensive play. We don't make the play, and fall behind 3-1. However, I loved how we came back and tied the game and went into extra innings. We've already played two extra-inning games this season, which means we're playing good enough, but we're not finishing games and doing what we need to win, as we left nine runners on base."
