MONTGOMERY - Just one day after falling one run short in a six-run comeback, Yamil Pagan's ninth inning one-out, bases-loaded RBI single scored Gustavio Rios to complete a comeback and give Alabama State an exciting 11-10 win over Winthrop (5-3). The win gave the Hornets their second win of the season and also gave the Hornets the series win with two wins over the Big South Conference members. "How about on back-to-back days we have significant deficits and these guys just don't give up," Head Coach
Mervyl Melendez said. "These guys fought back and they have that mentality we can always come back and I just love them."
"To me it's just a mindset and you have to have that mindset. It's not so much of the physical aspect you just have to have the mindset you can have good at bats, that you can put the ball in play and you can make something happen."
ASU (2-5) had 12 hits on the day and eight of those came from the top three hitters. Pagan's winning hit was actually his fourth hit of the day. He scored four runs to go along with the final RBI.
Diandre Amion was the Hornets designated hitter on the day and had two hits and three RBI, while
Carlos Ocasio was one of the heroes of the day with two home runs and four RBI.
Ocasio's first home run, a two-run homer, in the fourth inning helped ASU rally from a 7-3 deficit and evened the score at seven. His second home run was also a two-run shot that once again brought the Hornets back from a 9-7 deficit to even the score at nine.
ASU's fourth comeback was the ninth inning comeback that saw them enter the final frame down 10-9. During that inning while the players were showing a lot of excitement, Melendez was astute in looking at what was coming up.
"I don't know if I get overly excited about opportunities more than concentrating on what's next and what our next move will be if I have to make a move. So it's more of seeing what we need to do rather than the excitement part of it. In coaching that excitement level is when you win the game and it's over."
Gustavio Rios got in on the multiple hits attack with two hits while
Eriq White and
Oscar Prioleau added a hit each.
The Hornets used six pitchers on the day with
Hunter McIntosh entering the game and pitching the ninth inning. His one inning of work gave him his first win of the season.
The Hornets have a big week coming up as they hit the road for a midweek game at in-state rival Jacksonville State Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 6:30 p.m. After that game the excitement of the start of the Southwestern Athletic Conference season begins as Jackson State comes to Montgomery for a three-game series Fri.-Sun., March 4-6.
