Box Score A resurgent Alabama State women's basketball team took down the number one team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference not just once, but twice this season with a 58-48 win.
ASU fell behind by 10 going into the half. In their final road trip, ASU shot only 32.7% for the game, making only 18 out of 55 shots for the night. Turnovers were the difference as Texas Southern committed 26 to ASU's 13.The Lady Hornets converted 21 points off of turnovers and shot 19-of-24 from the free throw line.
Alabama State had three ladies in double figures.
Daniele Ewert paced her team with 13 points,
Ashanti Spencer and
Britney Wright had 11 points apiece.
Jasmine Peeples led both teams with 11 rebounds and three blocks. Peeples had nine points to add to the win.
"I am so elated about the performance of all our ladies tonight," said head coach Freda Freeman- Jackson. "I think that this is a motivation factor for us to go into the rest of the week on a winning note. Ewert and Spencer both stepped up tonight and had solid games and I was glad to see them both step up and take control of the situation like they did."
Freshman Joyce Kennerson led Texas Southern (17-9, 13-3 SWAC) with 24 points. Briana Sidney added 11.
The Lady Hornets (14-11, 12-4 SWAC) will go home for a quick turnaround as they host Jackson State on Thursday night for a 5:30 tip.
"We now have to go home and prep for these last two games," said Freeman-Jackson. "We are looking to take back those two losses we had at the beginning of the season. We most definitely have our work cut out for us and we are going to have to make sure that we work on our defense and do what we did tonight to get the win."
