Women's Basketball NCAA Back-to-Back Tournament Ready

The Alabama State women's basketball team will face the #2 seed University of Texas for the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship on Saturday, March 19 for an 8 p.m. match-up.

The game can be heard on bamastatesports.com or watched on ESPN2.

Making their third NCAA appearance in Alabama State's school history, the back-to-back SWAC Tournament Champions Lady Hornets (19-11) are the #15 seed for a second season in the first round of the Bridgeport (Conn.) Region.

Texas will be hosting the first and second rounds. Tomorrow will be featuring a doubleheader with the first matchup of BYU and Missouri, which is set to tip at 5:30 prior to the Lady Hornets contest. The winners of round one will continue onto the next round which is set for Monday.

The University of Texas (28-4) played their last game on March 7 against Baylor in the Big 12 conference tournament (79-63), and now has an opportunity to host the first rounds and play on their home court. The Lady Hornets may find this a bit challenging for them.

"This is a challenge for us," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. "Any time you face somebody on their own floor and you're talking about an NCAA Tournament, that's a disadvantage, but it gives us an opportunity to knock off the No. 2 seed in their own gym. But it's going to be an uphill battle for us, but I think my young ladies are ready for the task at hand."

The Longhorns are led in scoring by sophomore Brooke McCarty and teammate senior Imani Boyette, who averages 11 ppg apiece. Boyette leads the team in rebounding averaging 8.9 rpg. Ariel Atkins adds 10 ppg for Texas.

The competition tomorrow is expected to be very competitive and interesting because of the anticipation of the result from both teams' fans.

"Words cannot describe how the community would react if we pulled out this upset", Freeman-Jackson said. "I'm pretty sure they (fans) are going to be proud of the young ladies. They are going to be elated. Our fans would be just so thrilled about the opportunity that Alabama State University women's basketball team was able to upset the University of Texas."

Tomorrow's game is going to start off 0-0 just like the series. This will be the first time in history of the program that ASU will face this Big 12 team.

Alabama State is led in scoring by Britney Wright who averages 14.9 ppg, while teammate Jasmine Peeples leads the team in rebounding averaging 8.5 rpg. She is ranked 25th in the nation in shot blocks leading the team with 77 on the season and has an overall career of 212. Peeples is also the school's all-time shot blocker leader.

Wright is 35th in the nation with 13 double-doubles on the season. She is ranked as No. 2 as an all-time double-double leader.
