MONTGOMERY – Alabama State defeated Alcorn 10-0 and 8-1 in a double-header today at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex, and the double-header sweep completes the weekend sweep of the Braves as ASU remained undefeated in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action.
Â
It was another strong pitching performance for the Hornets (16-10/9-0) with
Tyler Howe pitching into the seventh inning in the first game and
Hunter McIntosh going into the sixth in game two.
Â
For the weekend the Hornets pitching staff only allowed one unearned run in the three games while picking up 31 strikeouts and only walking 11 batters.
Â
Alcorn State (4-17/3-6) came into the weekend series coming off a two-win performance over Alabama A&M the previous weekend, but were no match for the Hornets pitching staff on this weekend.
Â
"For this pitching staff to only give up one unearned run in three games is just phenomenal," Head Coach
Mervyl Melendez said. "I thought they threw a lot of strikes and did a good job of mixing it up and being able to hit spots. I hope we can continue this type of pitching the rest of the season."
Â
Game OneHowe (4-2) allowed five hits and had seven strikeouts in Saturday's first game. The ASU offense got off to a slow start against Alcorn's pitchers as they were unable to score until the fourth inning. Two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth and three in the sixth and one in the seventh stopped the game with the 10-run rule.
Â
ASU had 12 hits in the contest with
Diandre Amion, Yemil Pagan,
Hunter Allen and
Eriq White each collected two hits.Â
Carlos Ocasio and
Dillon Cooper blasted home runs, with Cooper's getting ASU on the board in the fourth to start the scoring.
Â
Game TwoHunter McIntosh (3-1) did not have his best stuff, but it was good enough. He had only walked three batters all season, but walked four in this game. He made up for the walks with seven strikeouts and only allowing four hits. He gave way to the Hornets bullpen with two outs in the sixth.
Â
ASU's
Austin Bizzle and
Patrick Coffin finished the final 3.1 innings in relief only allowing three hits in finishing the win.
Â
ASU pushed across two runs in the first inning which would be all the runs they would need, but they did add three more in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh to finish the scoring.
Â
Page and Ocasio led the 10-hit attack with two hits each.Â
Chris Biocic contributed with one hit, but had a team-high three rbi in the game.
Â
The Hornets have two midweek games this week. They will play at Troy Tuesday, March 29 at 6 p.m. The following night, Wednesday, ASU will travel to Jacksonville State to play the Gamecocks at 6:30 p.m.
Â
The next conference action for the Hornets will see ASU hit the road for their first conference road trip of the season. They will travel to Alabama A&M April 1-3 to face the rival Bulldogs.
