MONTGOMERY – Terrance LeFlore scored 17 points and Bobby Brown added 16 off the bench to lead Alabama State to a 71-54 win over Jackson State. The Tigers (17-13/12-5) came into Montgomery riding a four-game winning streak and standing in second place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Â
The Hornets defense, which has shown vast improvement over the second part of the conference season, held the Tigers to only 54 points and 29 percent shooting. JSU was also the top-shooting three point team in the league, but only managed hitting 3 of their 19 attempts (15.8%) against the Hornets man-to-man defense.
Â
"We're working hard defensively and our offense is starting to come together," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "We're taking good shots and that is one of the things we thought was hurting us early on was our shot selection and not keeping guys off the glass."
Â
Rebounding was big for the Hornets in tonight's game as ASU's big man
Tony Armstrong sat out the game due to an injury he suffered in Monday's game at Texas Southern.
Â
Glenn Hollaway stepped in for Armstrong and contributed with a game and career-high 12 rebounds. He has had a game-high four blocked shots as ASU actually out rebounded the league's second leading rebounding team 44-40.
Â
LeFlore's scoring came on five-of-10 shooting, including knocking down four of his six three point attempts. He also contributed with a game and career-high six assists.
Â
"It was really good to see some shots go down for Terrance," Jackson said. "He's been up and down, but since he's been inserted into the lineup he has been playing some really good basketball.
Â
Brown had the best game of the season as he hit seven of his 12 field goal attempts and completed a double-double with 11 rebounds.
Â
"We have talked to him (Brown) about his time is running down here in the Acadome and his senior year all together and he needed to take advantage of those things. Tonight I thought he did a really good job of coming in and taking advantage of his minutes, going and being active on the boards and not just stand around taking jump shots. He got to the rim and did some things around the basket."
Â
Jamel Waters did not have as much of a scoring burden in tonight's contest, but still managed to score 11 points and had four rebounds and four assists.
Â
Corvon Butler scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds in only 18 minutes of action as he sat out much of the second half while he continues to nurse an injury.
Â
The Hornets (13-16/8-9) shot 44 percent from the field and 38 percent from the three point line. ASU also hit 74 percent of their free throws.
Â
Raeford Worsham was the only Tiger to reach double-digits with 16 points. Paris Collins came into the game averaging 13.1 points and Chace Franklin was averaging 12.8. They scored seven points and two points respectively.
Â
The Hornets held a 39-29 lead at halftime led by Butler's nine points and Brown coming off the bench to chip in with eight. The Hornets shot 46 percent from the field and hit 40 percent of their three point field goals.
Â
ASU's defense held the Tigers to 30 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes with Specks and Collins leading the way with seven points each.

The Hornets will end the regular season when they host Grambling State Saturday, March 5 at 5 p.m. Check bamastatesports.com for all your watching and listening options.
