Errors, Missed Opportunities Hurt ASU at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – For the second time this season the Hornets traveled up I-85 to face the Auburn Tigers and for the second time came home on the wrong end of the score.

The first inning was a sign of things to come as Auburn had four runs cross the plate, but the first of three ASU errors allowed two of those.

The Tigers would go on to score at least one run in each of the first five innings totaling 10 runs, but only five of those were earned as ASU had trouble with their defense.

"That error in the first inning really hurt," Head Coach Mervyl Melendez said. "If we make that play then they only score one run I think and anything can happen, but our defense really hurt us tonight."

With the Hornets not playing this weekend Melendez had decided to pitch all three weekend starters just to get some work.  While it didn't go exactly as Melendez had planned all three did get in an inning each.  From there Melendez decided to get several pitchers in to the game and on the night ASU pitched eight different pitchers with the Tiger hitters scoring 11 runs off 15 hits.

"We really had planned on pitching Hunter (McIntosh) the first two innings, but with the error his pitch count got up so we decided to go with one an inning.  We were able to get a lot of work in with several pitchers since we did not play this weekend and we were able to do that."

The Hornet hitters didn't do much to help their cause as they only managed five hits and two runs off seven Tiger pitchers.

ASU's best opportunity to do some damage came in the third inning when they loaded the bases and scored a couple of runs off passed balls.  But it could have been a lot better if ASU could have come up with a couple of timely hits.

"We had a really good chance there in the third," Melendez said.  "We load the bases with one out and had our best hitter at the plate and had a strikeout.  While we did score two runs on the passed balls if we get a hit there and keep going, again, anything could have happened."

Oscar Prioleau had two of the ASU hits and also scored one of the runs.  The other hits came from Hunter Phillips, Gustavo Rios and Eriq White, who scored the other run.

McIntosh (5-2) took the loss on the mound.

ASU will continue this present road trip by jumping back into conference play with three games this weekend at Mississippi Valley State.  Friday's game will begin the series with a 6 p.m. start.  Check with bamastatesports.com for all your information options on the weekend series.
