The Alabama State University Hornets put on a show for the fans that came out to watch the inaugural Black and Gold Spring Game under second-year Head Coach Brian Jenkins.

If the fans liked offense, they got it.  If they liked defense, they got it.  In all it was an exciting day as the Gold Team was able to come out on top 20-6 in the fun-filled scrimmage.

"I was glad to see the guys come out and compete and operate the way they did," Head Coach Brian Jenkins said.  "We had a draft so guys were mixed in there and I tell you what, it was good to see those guys execute the scheme on both sides of the ball and really play with discipline and detail.  We didn't have a lot of penalties which is always good."

"I am excited to get out of this game without any major injuries and that our guys have a better understanding of what the expectation is and worked hard this spring to keep that expectation."

The Hornets hosted several children in a punt, pass and kick contest in-between the game's first three quarters and the latest ASU addition of SWAC Champions were introduced at halftime.  While there was a festive atmosphere surrounding the game, there was still some serious football to be played as players continued their competition for the 2016 season.

All four quarterbacks on the roster right now had some positives and negatives.  JuJuan Young-Battle started for the Gold team and led the Gold right down the field on the game's opening position.  The 15-play, 75 yard drive culminated when Young-Battle hit Joe Williams from 16 yards out for the opening score.

Young-Battle and Williams would hook up again later in the second half on a 28 yard scoring play as Young-Battle finished the game going seven-of-10 passing for 114 yards and the two scores.  He also had an interception and rushed for 13 yards.

Williams may have been the game's star player with three receptions for 74 yards.  All three receptions resulted in a score for the Gold team.

Ellis Richardson, who played in eight games last season completed five of his 10 passes for 51 yards and rushed another nine times for 20 yards.

The lone senior quarterback on the team Quinterrius Toppings, also had his moments.  He led the Black team on its lone score while hitting seven of his 12 attempts for 99 yards and a touchdown.  He also had an interception and rushed for three yards.  His scoring pass was a 10-yard, back of the endzone completion to Chett LeVay.

David Whitlow made the most of his chances behind center completing two of his three passes for 60 yards.  His final completion was a 30-yard strike to Williams for his third touchdown of the game.

The ASU runners did not fare as well against both defenses as the Hornet runners combined for 38 rushes for 90 yards, a 2.4 yards per carry average.

Darrel King was the leading rusher on the day with 22 yards on seven carries, while Kenneth Thomas had 20 yards on a game-high nine rushes.

Both defenses had interceptions as Brandon Harris and Robert Easterwood picked off passes.  Easterwood had a nice 65 yard return which he almost broke for a defensive score.

"As an offensive guy you never want to see the defense come up with turnovers, but I was excited to see those guys on defense buckle down and find a way to create a turnover and just competing and doing the things we asked them to do."

The defenses also recorded four sacks and six stops behind the line of scrimmage.  Malik Bridgers had eight tackles and Torrey Davis added seven to lead the defenses.  Defensive tackle Roderick "Ghost" Henderson was unblockable most of the game and when he wasn't adding to his five-tackle, two tackle-for-loss totals, he was constantly pushing blockers into the backfield to disrupt the offense.

Ricky Haley added five tackles, one of which was behind the line of scrimmage and Harris added five stops to go with his interception.

All-in-all, it was the type of spring game Jenkins saw as a big positive for the program.  "I think the program won today," Jenkins said.  "It was a good showing and it showed everyone the direction the program is going in.  I think our players represented the program well and I think what everyone saw today was a good coaching staff that has prepared this team and gotten this team better in a very short amount of time."

The 2016 season will begin in four short months as preseason work will begin with the season-opener set for Sept. 3 at Texas-San Antonio.
