Hornets Battle To Take Game One At Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alabama State baseball team outlasted a scrappy Alcorn State team 7-3 in game one of the weekend series at Willie McGowan Stadium / Bill Foster Field.

Joseph Camacho improved to 8-0, allowing two unearned runs in the first inning, yielding seven hits and one walk while striking out eight. Dillon Cooper went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, while Oscar Prioleau, Diandre Amion, and Carlos Ocasio each had two hits as the Hornets (29-14 overall, 19-0 SWAC) won their sixth straight game and have now won 20 consecutive conference games dating to last season.

After Alabama State scored a run in the first, Alcorn State (14-26, 9-11) scored two unearned runs to take the lead that stood until the fourth.

With one out, Yamil Pagan singled to center, advancing Oscar Prioleau, who reached on a fielder's choice, to third. Amion's RBI groundout scored Prioleau to tie the score at 2-2.

The Hornets took the lead for good in the fifth. Cooper tripled to center to lead off the inning, and scored on an error for a 3-2 lead.

Alabama State broke it open with a four-run seventh. Cooper led off with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Biocic. Ray Hernandez then singled through the right side, scoring Cooper. After Hunter Phillips was hit by a pitch, White reached on a throwing error, scoring Hernandez. Prioleau then drilled a single to right, scoring Phillips and White for a 7-2 led.

The teams will play a Saturday doubleheader, weather permitting, starting at 11 a.m.
