BIRMINGHAM – All around the country college football fans know the beginning of football season is just around the corner when conferences begin holding their media day and for fans of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) it is no different.
The Southwestern Athletic Conference has set Friday July 15 as SWAC Media Day as all 10 SWAC programs will send its head football coach and two players as representatives of the teams to be interviewed by the media. The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will be held at the Birmingham Marriott.
Alabama State will be represented by two post-season honorees. An FCS Stats All-American and reigning SWAC Defensive Player of the Year
Kourtney Berry will be one of the representatives. He will be joined at Media Day by
Kerry Williams an All-SWAC performer a year ago.
Berry enters his senior campaign with over 300 career tackles. He has made at least 100 tackles each of his three seasons with the Hornets and that includes last year's SWAC-leading 130. He is a three-time All-SWAC honoree and a two-time All-American.
Berry led the ASU defense which showed tremendous improvement over the course of the season. By season's end ASU was second in the SWAC in scoring defense averaging 24.8 points per game. Their 365 yards per game allowed was also the SWAC's second-best and their stingy rush defense led the conference only allowing 142 yards rushing per game.
Williams has been a three-year starter at center for ASU. He has helped open holes for 1,000-yard performers Malcolm Cyrus and Isaiah Crowell. Last year he anchored a line that saw the Hornets rush for over 180 yards per game, averaging 4.4 yards per carry and rushing for 24 touchdowns.
ASU's offense averaged over 373 yards per game and averaged 5.5 yards per play while scoring 25.5 points per game.
The SWAC also released the conference's 2016 television game schedule and the Hornets are scheduled for three broadcasts with the chance of two more televised games at the end of the season.
The Hornets first broadcast game will be a road game at defending SWAC Champion Alcorn State. The game will be played Saturday Sept. 10 and is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN3.
The 75
th edition of the Magic City Classic against Alabama A&M will also be broadcast on ESPN3. The Oct. 29 showdown in Birmingham has a 3 p.m. scheduled kickoff.
ASU's Turkey Day Classic will have Miles College coming to Montgomery for the 93
rd Classic which has been moved back to being played on Thanksgiving Day. The two teams will battle on ESPN3 beginning at 3 p.m.
If ASU win's the East Division of the SWAC, the Hornets will play another television game on Saturday Dec. 3 in the SWAC Championship. The game will be played in Houston and shown on ESPNU. The kickoff will be scheduled at a later date.
Another television game will be added to the Hornets schedule if they win the SWAC title. The second Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl will pit the Hornets against the MEAC Champion in Atlanta on Saturday Dec. 17. The game will have an 11 a.m. kick time and will be televised on ABC.
