The Alabama State volleyball team (3-7) begins its 2016 conference schedule this weekend as it takes on Alcorn State and Southern U.
The Lady Hornets will begin their conference schedule against the Alcorn State Braves (1-7) on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. match at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
On November 14, 2015 Alabama State rolled passed the Braves 3-0 in Lorman, Miss., and with that win it moved ASU to the number 2 seed in the SWAC's East division last season.
Alabama State will finish the weekend Sunday squaring off with the Southern Jaguars (1-7) at 10 a.m., in Baton Rouge at the Clifford Seymour Gym.
Last season ASU defeated Southern in a rematch from the 2014 SWAC Championship 3-1.
Neither the Braves nor the Jags have seen action since the weekend of Sept. 6-7. Alabama State on the other hand played three games last weekend ending with a 2-1 record and is on a two game win streak. Their wins were over Savannah State and Chicago State and the 3-1 loss came against Troy on the first day of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational.
Not only did ASU sweep the conference with weekly honors they have several players that are in the top 10 of the conference.
Briana Dorsey is third in the conference in hitting percentage (.247), fourth in kills (76) and second in blocks (33). Freshman
Krysta Medearis is sixth in the league with 75 kills, and fifth with 27 blocks. Redshirt junior
Candace Martin sits in seventh with 23 blocks. Setter
Justus Tuiolosega leads the conference with 15 service aces and she also leads in assists (190). Â Senior
Jamie Coleman sits in the second spot with 130 total digs on the season.
"I am excited about my kids, I am excited about playing this weekend," said head coach Penny Lucas White.
