MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – Samuelle Grove scored one of her two goals on the day in the fifth minute to give Gardner Webb a lead that it would not relinquish as the Alabama State women's soccer team fell 5-1 in a first ever meeting between the teams on Sunday afternoon at the ASU Soccer Complex.
The Lady Hornets (1-7) got on the board when junior forward
Lexi Krieger notched her third goal of the season in the 82
nd minute.
Krieger scored within a minute of checking back into the game after departing the match in the 66
th minute for a rest.Â
She dribbled around the defense and found the right corner of the net to cut the deficit to 3-1.
But, the Runnin' Bulldogs (3-5-2) had a quick answer as Grove scored her second of the day from some nice passing by Eline Glamsland and Stina Kleppe.Â
Jessica Ferguson added another goal in the 85
th minute.Â
Shyann Cordova and
Inma Martinez each recorded one shot on goal for ASU, but the team found themselves on their heels for much of the match as it was outshot 17-3 in the category.Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Gianna Guyot started and made a season-high 12 saves for the Lady Hornets.Â
Next, Alabama State hits the road and opens up conference play at Prairie View A&M on Friday at 7 p.m.
