Lady Hornets Volleyball Team Captures Fourth Straight Win;Sweeps Southern

Box Score It was the rookie combination show of Krysta Medearis and Bayle Bennett on Sunday morning as the Alabama State volleyball team rolled to a three-set victory over Southern at the Clifford Seymour Gym. The Lady Hornets, who have won four consecutive matches, captured their second three-set victory on the season with the scores of 25-10, 25-19, 25-9.

Ni'yesha Brown got Alabama State off to a great start as she posted four kills with a .364 hitting percentage in the first set.  Medearis put up three kills having a .333 hitting percentage and one block assist.  Bennett added three kills in the second set and three in the final stanza to finish with eight kills in the match.  Medearis also notched a total of eight kills on the morning.

"I really feel like these ladies (Bennett; Medearis) gave a solid performance today and I am proud of all of them," said head coach Penny Lucas-White.  "They followed the game plan to the T."

"The performance from the middles is really beginning to steady out.  We are starting to get good offensive production and they're starting to create defensive opportunities by getting more touches on some balls.  Five blocks and 47 digs [as a team] with amount of touches we had is an outstanding performance and I was so proud of them."

Libero Jamie Coleman led the defensive back row with 14 digs, while sophomore Kayla Torres had nine digs, Bennett finished with eight.

On the defensive side of the net, Briana Dorsey led the way with a match-high four blocks (one solo, three assists).  Junior Tamara Martin finished with two blocks.

Tuiolosega ran the ASU offense handing out 19 assists to go along with her seven digs.  She pushed the team to a .244 hitting percentage.

Candace Martin paced the Lady Hornets as she hit a .500, while middle blocker Dorsey (.333) hit above .300.

State now looks forward to next weekend's games as the team continues on the road to play Grambling (3 p.m.) on Friday, September 23rd and UAPB on Saturday for a 10 a.m. matchup.
