HOUSTON, TX  – Paige Haywood scored the only goal on a penalty kick in the 48
th minute in a match that lasted over three hours due to a one-hour plus lightning delay as the Alabama State women's soccer team lost 1-0 in a SWAC game to Texas Southern on Sunday afternoon at the Alexander Durley Sports Complex.  Â
The PK was given as a result of a hand ball as the Lady Tigers (4-5 overall, 2-0 SWAC) took advantage of the spot.Â
Alabama State (2-8 overall, 1-1 SWAC) was outshot 12-7 including 9-3 for shots on goal.
Junior forward
Lexi Krieger had all three shot on goal attempts for the Lady Hornets in a tough, defensive battle that saw the teams head into halftime in a scoreless tie.Â
Gianna Guyot (2-5) played a full 90 minutes in goal and made eight saves for ASU.Â
"We didn't come out with the energy needed to get the win," said ASU head women's soccer coach
Jodie Smith.Â
"We were sluggish to start. Gianna [Guyot] played a really good game and made some good saves.  But, we didn't apply enough offensive pressure throughout the game to give ourselves a chance."
Next, Alabama State will play against Howard in a SWAC championship rematch from last season on Sunday at noon.Â
The SWAC Digital Network will be covering the match.
