Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lady Hornets Sting Valley;Captures Seventh Straight Win

It was the Krysta Medearis and Bayle Bennett show on Friday evening as the Alabama State volleyball team rolled to a three-set victory over visiting Mississippi Valley State at Lockhart Gym.  The Lady Hornets, who have won seven consecutive matches, captured their sixth three set victory of the season with the scores of 25-23, 25-23, 25-16.

"I think my kids were playing safe," said Penny Lucas-White head volleyball coach.  "However I think Valley did a wonderful job.  They were aggressive; they were going after the ball and swinging away.  We had been telling our girls if the sets not there then I just need you guys to place the ball, but we weren't passing well, but once we said hey that we need to stay aggressive and once I changed some things in the third set it made a difference."

Medearis got off to a great start as she posted six kills with a .250 hitting percentage in the first set.  The freshman outside hitter added two kills in the second set and five in the final stanza to finish with a match high 13 kills.  Bennett aided with 12 kills in the game leading the team with seven in the third set hitting a .500 percentage.

"Bayle and Krysta both had wonderful matches tonight," Lucas-White said.  "My two freshmen did a phenomenal job and Jamie had the back row covered.  Jamie shows true team leadership."

Senior libero Jamie Coleman led the defensive back row with 20 digs, her fourth consecutive match with 10 or more saves while Bennett finished with nine digs.

On the defensive side of the net, junior Briana Dorsey led the way with a match high three blocks (one solo, two assists).  Ni'yesha Brown and Candace Martin each added a pair of block assists.

Justus Tuiolosega handed out 18 assists to go along with her seven digs.  As a team ASU finished with a .212 hitting percentage.  Dorsey paced the Lady Hornets as she hit a .700 clip.

"Although Bri hit a .700 we really didn't pass in the middle enough to give her some more touches and I wish we would have," said Lucas-White

State now looks forward to tomorrow's match against Jackson State who has just one win in the SWAC entering Saturday's contest.

Lucas-White knows that a challenge awaits her team Saturday evening, but believes that her team is ready for it.

"I think that Jackson is always a big game for us," said Lucas-White.  "They are the reigning champs they beat us in the championship game last year.  But with no doubt our kids will show up and be ready to play tomorrow.  I have to make sure I keep them focused and healthy.  We are going to just take one match at a time, take one set at a time, where we don't look over anybody.  We kind of looked over Valley tonight and we can't do that with any team."

Game time is set for 7 p.m. Live stats will be available through bamastatesports.com.
