Box Score The Alabama State volleyball team fell to Troy 3-1 (19-25, 14-25, 26-24, 20-25) on Friday evening on the first day of the Collegiate Cup Invitational.
 
ASU found itself in a hole early as Troy cruised to a 25-19 victory in the first set.
 
Troy jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in set two, but the Lady Hornets would not go away as they bounced the score around on four ties the last one at 13-13.   The Trojans took advantage of ASU's 13 attack errors to coast to a 25-14 win in the set.
 
Contrary to the first two sets, the Lady Hornets responded in the third set as they jumped out to a 4-1 on five ties.  The teams were tied 17-17 when the Lady Hornets scored four of the next five points to take a 21-19 lead.  Troy cut the deficit to see a final tie at 23-23, ASU would not go out quietly as the team fought off two match points to walk away with the 26-24 win.
 
Troy continued looked to be the dominate team for much of the fourth set. The largest lead the Trojans held was at 20-15.  ASU cut the deficit to 20-18, on a service ace by Justus Tuiolosega, but Troy was able to string together four of the next five points to take the set 25-20.
 
Defensively, ASU was led by senior Jamie Coleman who finished with a match-high 19 digs.  Freshmen Bailey Bennett and Asha Daniels added six digs apiece, and freshman Krysta Medearis recorded a second game best of four blocks (1 solo and 3 assisted) to lead ASU.
 
Bennett finished the game with a team high of 10 kills, one assist, and one block, while junior Niyesha Brown knocked down nine kills and two assisted blocks.
 
Both schools were fairly even with aces (7-6), digs (56-45), and blocks (20-13).  Justus ran the offense tonight as she had a game high of 35 assist.
 
Alabama State will return to action for the final day of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational where they will meet the Savannah State Tigers at 10 a.m.
