Lady Hornets face Texas Southern on the road Saturday

The two teams are at the top of the SWAC Standings

HOUSTON, Texas – The Alabama State University women's basketball team takes their six-game winning streak on the road for a pair of games this weekend, beginning with a match-up between two of the three teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Saturday night.

Alabama State (7-10, 6-1 SWAC) and Texas Southern (11-7, 5-2 SWAC) will meet Saturday night at 5:30 pm inside H&PE Arena. The two teams come into the game headed in opposite directions with the Lady Hornets winning their last six contests dating back to January 4, while Texas Southern has lost back-to-back games entering the weekend matchup.

Three-time, and current, SWAC Player of the Week Britney Wright leads the Lady Hornets into the contest coming off a week in which she averaged 31.5 points per game in a pair of conference games. The senior poured in 28 points against Alcorn State last Saturday, before setting a new career-high with 35 against Southern at home on Monday. Fellow senior, Daniele Ewert averaged 14 points per game last week, including 18 against Alcorn State.

Wright is currently second in the conference in scoring at 16.1 points per game, and she is currently in the top five in rebounding at 7.1 points per game. Over the last six games, the senior is averaging 23.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Ewert is averaging 10.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for the Lady Hornets.

The Lady Hornets are currently riding a three-game road winning streak heading into the contest, having won those games in conference play from January 7 through January 14.

Meanwhile, Texas Southern had a six-game winning streak snapped last Saturday in a road loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. This season, the Lady Tigers have a trio of players averaging double figures led by Joyce Kennerson at 15.7 points per game. Artavia Ford averages 12.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, while Kaitlyn Palmer averages 10.3 for the Lady Tigers.

The meeting will be the 71st all-time between the two schools with Alabama State holding a 46-24 advantage, including a 21-16 advantage in Houston. The
Lady Hornets have won the last two meetings, and six of the last 10 games in the series.
