Alabama State remains undefeated in conference play

Lady Hornets defeated Prairie View A&M and UAPB on second day of Roundup

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University volleyball team remained undefeated in conference play, and reached 20 wins on the season with a pair of victories in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Roundup Saturday at Lockhart Gymnasium.
 
Alabama State (20-9, 13-0 SWAC), winners of their last 34 conference matches dating back to the championship game of 2015, won their opening match easily over Prairie View A&M University 3-0 (25-18,25-12,25-12) Saturday morning.
 
The Lady Hornets used 12 kills each from Briana Dorsey and Payten Clark, as the middle hitters/blockers for Alabama State combined for 25 of the team's 42 kills in the match. Dorsey finished the match hitting .647 with just one error in 17 total attacks, while Clark hit .526 with just two errors on 19 total attacks.
 
Kori Kutsch ended the match with 21 assists, while Justus Tuiolosega added 14 as the two combined on all by four assists in the match for the Lady Hornets. Kayla Torres came off the bench to lead the team with eight digs, while Clark led the team with five blocks. Dorsey and Bayle' Bennett each added four blocks in the opening win of the day.
 
The Lady Hornets struggled early on in their final match of the day, but came away with a 3-0 (26-24,25-19,25-16) victory over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the nightcap. The Lady Hornets faced two set points in the opening set before storming back to win the set, and traded points midway through the second before they were able to pull away.
 
Bennett led Alabama State with 13 kills and 11 digs, posting a double-double, while Dorsey added 12 kills while hitting .429 with just three errors on 21 total attacks. Kutsch reached the 20-assist plateau again as he recorded 24, while Tuiolosega added 15. Asha Daniels led Alabama State with 22 digs, while Clark had five blocks in the nightcap.
 
Dorsey and Candace Martin each added three blocks in the win.
 
Alabama State faces Texas Southern in their final of the SWAC Roundup Sunday morning at 10 am inside Lockhart Gymnasium. Admission is free to all home volleyball matches.
