MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Through seven matches of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) season, two teams find themselves undefeated atop the East Division – Alabama State University and Alabama A&M University. However, after Thursday night, only one team will be able to stay atop the East Division as the two teams meet.
Alabama State (14-7, 7-0 SWAC) enters the match on a nine-match streak, and winners of 12 of their last 13 matches. The Lady Hornets also enter the match having won 28 consecutive conference matches dating back to last season.
The Lady Hornets sit atop every major statistical category in the SWAC with the exception of blocks (third), assists (second), service aces (fourth) and digs (fourth). As a team, Alabama State is currently ninth in the country in total blocks, 16th in team kills, 18th in service aces and 22nd in team digs.
Senior
Briana Dorsey, who has 700-plus career digs, leads the conference in hitting percentage at .372 for the season, while fellow senior
Ni'yesha Brown leads the conference in kills with 238 (3.01 per set).
Kori Kutsch is currently third in the conference in assists and 40th in the nation in service aces, while Dorsey and
Payten Clark are both in the top six in blocks. The duo are also ranked in the top 30 in the nation in total blocks as Dorsey is 19th overall and Clark 28th.
Meanwhile, Brown is currently 55th in points and 59th total kills, while also being ranked 28th in total attacks in the NCAA.
Alabama A&M (7-13, 7-0 SWAC) enters the match having won seven of their last eight matches. They are led by Terra Brooks with 163 kills and Syretha Pride 135, while Meredith Sleck has 520 total assists.
The match starts at 7 pm in Huntsville (Ala.).
