MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University volleyball team will play one of its final two home matches of the season Thursday night at Lockhart Gymnasium, taking on rival Alabama A&M University.
The match begins at 7 pm and can be seen on the SWAC Digital Network.
Alabama State (23-9, 16-0), the regular season conference champion, looks to keep a conference winning streak alive that started with the first conference match of 2016 and has reached 37 straight. The last time the Lady Hornets lost a conference match was in the 2015 championship match against Jackson State.
They will have to do so against a tough Alabama A&M (13-17, 13-3 SWAC) who is two games up on Texas Southern for the second overall seed in the upcoming SWAC Championship Tournament.
The two met earlier this season in Huntsville with Alabama State claiming a 3-0 victory behind the play of
Ni'yesha Brown with 13 kills.
Krysta Medearis added seven, while
Bayle' Bennett added six and
Briana Dorsey five in the straight-set victory. In that same match, the Lady Hornets held Alabama A&M to a .100 hitting percentage and not allowing any player above six kills for the match.
Through 32 matches this season, the Lady Hornets find themselves in the top 10 in the county in four different categories. Alabama State is currently fifth in the country in kills with 1,442 – trailing only Northern Iowa (1,541), Sacramento State (1,532), Jacksonville State (1,493) and Missouri State (1,457).
They are also seventh in the country in service aces (164) and assists (1,318), while they are holding at ninth in opponent hitting percentage (.148). They are also 14th in the nation in total blocks (254.5), 17th in total attacks (3,860) and 28th in digs (1,654).
