The Hornets used a 217 yard rushing performance, including 85 yards from the game's offensive MVP – Darryl Pearson, Jr. – and 71 from freshman George Golden.

The Hornets also scored their third defensive touchdown of the season when Ronnie Scott, the defensive MVP of the game, returned an interception 59 yards for game's first touchdown. The defense also forced another turnover late in the fourth quarter that led to another Alabama State touchdown.

In last year's game, Alabama State gained 294 yards of total offense in the victory and used touchdowns from Alex Anderson and Palmer Graham for the win.
