MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State, winners of their last two contests, hit the road for a key Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game against Jackson State on Saturday afternoon.
Alabama State (2-5, 2-2 SWAC) enters the contest following a 21-16 victory in the Magic City Classic over Alabama A&M last week, and finds itself just one game back of Alcorn State in the loss column in the division. The Hornets used a 217 yard rushing performance, including 85 yards from the game's offensive MVP –
Darryl Pearson, Jr. – and 71 from freshman
George Golden.
The Hornets also scored their third defensive touchdown of the season when
Ronnie Scott, the defensive MVP of the game, returned an interception 59 yards for game's first touchdown. The defense also forced another turnover late in the fourth quarter that led to another Alabama State touchdown.
Alabama State has won the last three meetings, including last season's 14-7 victory. In last year's game, Alabama State gained 294 yards of total offense in the victory and used touchdowns from
Alex Anderson and
Palmer Graham for the win. Kourtney Berry led the team with nine tackles, while
Darron Johnson added eight in the victory.
This season, Alabama State is second in the conference on points allowed as they give up an average of just 22.6 as compared to the 32.6 given up by Jackson State. The Hornets average 125.1 yards on the ground, while they give up an average of 184 per game. Meanwhile, Jackson State averages just 96.8 yards rushing, while giving up 171.4.
The game kicks off at 2 pm (cst) at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, and can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network beginning at 1:30 p (cst). The game will be part of Jackson State's homecoming festivities with all gates at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium will open at 11 am.
