MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Winners of four of their last five games, Alabama State looks to put an exclamation point on the 2017 season Thursday afternoon when they host Edward Waters College in the 94th annual Turkey Day Classic.
Kickoff is set for 2 pm and can seen, and heard, on the Hornet Sports Network beginning with the pregame show at 1:30 pm.
After dropping their first five games of the season, the Hornets came back to win four consecutive road games – all conference games – to finish above .500 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play. Alabama State finished with an identical East Division record with division champion Alcorn State, but finished second overall due to the head-to-head matchup in October.
The Hornets enter the contest off a 16-10 victory over Mississippi Valley State; a game in which
Hunter Hanson kicked three field goals and
Ronnie Scott sealed the game with a late fourth quarter interception. Alabama State will look to win their first home game of the 2017 season at homecoming this weekend.
Alabama State has relied on its defense this season, a defense that is second in the conference in scoring (19.6 ppg) and total defense. They are also ranked in the top 40 in several categories in all of Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) play. Meanwhile, senior
Trevor Vincent is one of the best punters in the country as he is averaging over 40 yards per punt on the season, and has allowed just 12 returns.
The Hornets and Edward Waters have met one time, a 38-6 victory by the Hornets in 2009, but have never met in the Turkey Day Classic. Alabama State has won four consecutive Turkey Day Classic contests since 2013.
Alabama State will honor their seniors, playing their final home game in a Hornet uniform, prior to kickoff at ASU Stadium. The Turkey Day Classic parade will begin at 9 am downtown in front of the capitol, and gates inside ASU Stadium will open at 12 noon.
