MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Britney Wright continued her assault on the Alabama State University women's basketball record book with a double-double as the Lady Hornets completed a regular season sweep over in-state rival Alabama A&M University, 62-35 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play Saturday afternoon.
Wright finished the night 28 points and 14 rebounds for Alabama State (10-12, 9-3 SWAC), who are now tied for first place in the conference following a victory by Grambling State over Texas Southern on Saturday. The senior moved into third all-time at the school in scoring with 1,660 career points, passing Latricia McDole (1990-94) and is now just 63 points from becoming the second all-time leading scorer at the school.
With her double-digit rebounding Saturday, the senior also moved to sixth on the all-time rebounding list with 834 total rebounds. She passed a pair of former Alabama State letterwinners in Quentori Alford (2010-14) and Cydney Coleman (1989-93). Wright stands 27 rebounds from moving to fourth on the all-time list for her career.
Wright wasn't the only player making a move on the all-time list as
Shamyiah Smith finished with a pair of assists, putting her at 200 for her career and moving her to 10th on the all-time list. While several players made moves on the career list, it was the overall effort of the Lady Hornets that got the attention of their head coach. After struggling the last few games in the second and third quarters, Alabama State outscored Alabama A&M (2-19, 0-12 SWAC) 33-19 in those two periods Saturday.
"Everyone knows that when you play your rival you don't know what to expect and you pray your team comes out ready to play," Alabama State head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said. "I thought my girls were really focused, especially on the defensive end. They held Alabama A&M to 11 points going into the half, and although we didn't score a lot we did enough on the defensive end to keep them contained. I was really proud of our young ladies for focusing on things on the defensive end and doing the things we asked them to do. Going into the second half, I told them the first five minutes were crucial and I thought we did a really good job of pushing it up (the lead) and pressed the entire time. We did a better job of getting steals and scoring in transition tonight, and that was the difference in the game. We ran off six or eight points in less than two minutes."
Alabama State finished the night shooting 41.7 (20-for-48) percent from the floor, including 45.5 (5-of-11) from beyond the arc. They also shot 60.7 (17-of-28) percent from the free throw line, while winning the rebounding battle 43-31.
Jameica Cobb led Alabama A&M with 18 points.
Alabama State returns to action next Saturday against Alcorn State on the road with tip set for 5:30 pm.
