JACKSON, Miss. – After dropping the doubles point and two singles points, the Alabama State University women's tennis team found itself in a hole; however, wins at number four and two singles propelled the Lady Hornets to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Jackson State at the SWAC Round-up Friday afternoon.
Alabama State (5-4, 2-0 SWAC) dropped the doubles point despite winning at number one and having chances at number three before losing a break, and dropping the final doubles match 7-5.
Jackson State won two of the five singles matches, however, it was the strength of the Lady Hornets that gave themselves a chance to win. After wins by
Gabriela Lackova (number three) and
Mirna Curcic (number five), the Lady Hornets used a victory by
Brankica Orlovic in a hard-fought three set match against Nina Zhang of Jackson State. After dropping the first set 2-6, Orlovic stormed back to win the match 6-2, 6-2; turning all eyes to number two singles.
At number two singles,
Marine Cartier split the first two sets against Lucia Solio of Jackson State 6-3, 3-6. The two battled in the third set until Cartier was able to get up a break and win the final set 6-4 to give Alabama State the overall victory.
Alabama State returns to action on the final day of the SWAC Roundup against Southern University and the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, beginning at 9 am.
