NEW ORLEANS, La. - The top-seeded Alabama State University women's tennis team made quick work of their semifinal match, knocking off the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Alcorn State, 4-0 at the Pepsi Tennis Center.
Alabama State (12-8) picked up the first point of the match as they won the two doubles matches that were completed. The Lady Hornets picked up identical 6-2 victories at number two behind the All-Conference team of
Reka Szentes and
Marine Cartier, and at number three behind
Mirna Curcic and
Gabriela Lackova.
The Lady Hornets carried the 1-0 lead into singles play where they won the first three singles matches completed; while they were leading in one other, trailing and tied in the other two.
Szentes won her match at number one singles over Alcorn State's Daria Chemodanova 6-0, 6-4; while
Marija Blazevic claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory at number six. Meanwhile, Cartier won her match easily at number two over Klavdija Bukovec 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Hornets advance to Sunday's championship match against Jackson State, in search of their third title in school history and first since 1999. The two teams met earlier this season with Alabama State claiming 4-3 victory in the SWAC Roundup hosted by Jackson State.
The championship match is set for 9 am at the Pepsi Tennis Center.
