ASU concludes three-game series with loss to MVSU

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University baseball team concluded its three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series on Sunday afternoon as the Hornets fell to Mississippi Valley State, 7-2, during Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
 
The Hornets, who saw its 16-game win streak against the Delta Devils snapped on Sunday, used five pitchers as Darren Kelly (0-1) started on the rubber and worked 3.1 innings. He gave up three runs on hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Jon Roblez, Patrick Coffin, Brandon Caples and Chase Laney pitched in relief.
 
After a scoreless first inning, Mississippi Valley State struck with two runs on two hits to grab a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
 
The Delta Devils (7-31 overall, 6-18 SWAC) added to the advantage with a run in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
 
Alabama State (23-22, 15-6) got a run back in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 3-1.
 
Hunter Allen was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Joshua Dunson reached on a one-out infield single as Allen stayed at second. Joseph Estrada followed and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cage Cox was hit by a pitch to bring in Allen from third. However, Carlos Ocasio and Gustavo Rios struck out to end the ASU inning.
 
Mississippi Valley State quickly responded as the Delta Devils plated four runs on four hits to grab a 7-1 lead.
 
The Hornets tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, but was only able to come away with one run.
 
Eriq White reached on an infield hit to begin the inning and moved up 90 feet to second on Joseph Estrada's base hit to right. Cox advanced the runners a base with a groundout to second. White scored when Ocasio reached on an infield hit.
 
Kevin Gonzalez (1-2), who threw 137 pitches, picked up the victory in eight innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and three walks. Connor Sheppeard pitched the ninth in relief.
 
Prior to the game, ASU honored nine seniors (Chris Biocic, Austin Bizzle, Brandon Caples, Patrick Coffin, Burke Echelmeier, Tyler Howe, Carlos Ocasio, Edgardo Rivera and Jon Roblez).
 
Alabama State returns to action on Tuesday night in a non-conference game against Jacksonville State. First pitch from the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex is scheduled for 6 p.m.
