MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University baseball team hit a pair of two-run home runs, but it wasn't enough as the Hornets dropped a non-conference game to UAB, 5-4, on Wednesday night at Young Memorial Field.
Terrell McCall (1-6) started on the bump for the Hornets and worked two innings. He was tagged for five runs on six hits with one strikeout.
Patrick Coffin and
Austin Bizzle worked in relief.
UAB (21-24) quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of two-run homers by Pierce Ressmeyer and Antonio Ralat.
Alabama State (24-23) rallied in the third with four runs on two hits.
Edgardo Rivera drew a walk to begin the frame and
Joseph Estrada belted his team-leading ninth homer to right center to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Hornets weren't done in the inning as
Hunter Phillips was hit by a pitch and with two down,
Carlos Ocasio smacked his fifth homer to left, tying the game at 4.
The Blazers got the game-winning run in the bottom of the third as Brewer Hicklen led off the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ressmeyer brought Hicklen in with a base hit to left, giving UAB a 5-4 lead.
The Hornets had a chance in the ninth to tie the game as
Eriq White was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
Joshua Dunson followed and reached on a fielder's choice as his bunt was fielded UAB first baseman Thomas Johns, who peeled and threw out White at second for the first out.
Edgardo Rivera bounced out to the second baseman as Dunson moved into scoring position at second. Estrada ended the game with a groundout to first.
Tanner Graham started for the Blazers and went just one inning. Kyle Davis, Sylvester Toe, Adam Lamar, Dylan Munger and Isaiah Gonzales-Montoya pitched in relief.
Alabama State, which already locked up the No. 2 seed for the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball Tournament May 17-23, will wrap up SWAC regular season action this weekend in Lorman, Miss., against Alcorn State. First Pitch against the Braves is set for 6 p.m. on Friday at Willie E. "Rat" McGowan Stadium.
