MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Ni'yesha Brown led Alabama State University to a 3-0 (25-14,25-23,25-12) season-opening victory over Savannah State University.
"I think it was a great opener," Alabama State head coach
Penny Lucas-White said. "I am pleased with their energy and their celebrations after big points, and they are having fun out there."
Brown, a preseason All-SWAC selection, led Alabama State (1-0) with a career-high 18 kills; besting her mark of 17 set last season against Texas Southern. The total was also the 15th time she has recorded double-digit kills in her career.
Krysta Medearis, another All-SWAC selection, was one kill shy of double-digits, finishing with nine kills. That mark matched the seventh-best total of her career.
"Well I knew they were excited to play," White said. "It showed, the energy was great but we just missed too many serves. We just need to minimize our service errors, but Ni'yesha had an incredible night and so did Krysta. We have got to get more players involved in our offense, and that is what we were missing tonight."
