MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Fresh of the season-opening sweep in the ISTAP Collegiate Cup, the Alabama State University volleyball team hits the road for the first of four consecutive road matches beginning Tuesday night at Auburn.
The match begins at 7 pm.
Alabama State (2-0) and Auburn (2-1) have not met since
Penny Lucas-White took over the Lady Hornet program, and the match marks the first of two against an SEC foe as Alabama State faces Alabama at home in October. The match against Auburn highlights a four-match road trip for Alabama State, as they travel to Portland (Ore.) this weekend to play three matches – which includes a pair against Power 5 schools.
Over the weekend, Alabama State had a pair of players set career highs that included
Ni'yesha Brown doing the deed twice. The senior set a career-high with 18 kills against Savannah State on Friday night, and set a new mark with 19 against North Carolina A&T on Saturday. She wasn't the only player to set a career-high as
Asha Daniels set a career-high with 13 digs against North Carolina A&T in the five-set victory.
Brown recorded 37 kills in the two matches, while
Krysta Medearis kept pace with 25 in the two matches including 16 against North Carolina A&T.
Briana Dorsey and
Payten Clark are both in double figures after the weekend, with 13 and 11 respectively.
Meanwhile,
Justus Tuiolosega recorded the first double-double of the season for the Lady Hornets with 25 assists and 11 digs against North Carolina A&T. She and
Kori Kutsch combined for 87 assists in the two Alabama State victories.
The Lady Hornets will be taking on an Auburn team who went 2-1 in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Atlanta (Ga.) over the weekend. The Tigers lone loss came in straight sets against Michigan State, while they defeated Georgia Tech (3-0) and Furman (3-1).
Brenna McIlroy paces Auburn so far this season with 33 kills, leading six players in double figures in kills. Shaina White and Macy Reece each have added 24, while Gwyn Jones has chipped in 20. Alexa Filley leads Auburn with 103 assists.
