Alabama State falls to Samford

Alabama State looking for first road win of season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Alabama State University soccer team dropped their third consecutive road match to open the season, falling to Samford 5-0 Friday night in non-conference action.
 
"It was really a tough game," Alabama State University head coach Jodie Smith said. "We gave up one early, and it set the tone for the rest of the game that we never had a chance to come back from and get going. They are a really talented team, and they have played high quality competition this year."
 
Samford (1-4) scored two out of their goals during the first half to build an insurmountable lead heading into the half, before putting the game away early in the second half. Korrie Sauder knocked home a pair of goals on the night for Samford.
 
Meanwhile, Gianna Guyot recorded 14 saves in 90 minutes of action.

How it Happened:  
  • Samford knocked home the first goal in the fifth minute on an Ella Baggett shot, while they extended the lead in the 28th minute for the 2-0 halftime lead.
  • Samford pushed the lead to 4-0 just eight minutes into the second half.
  • Alabama State was only able to get three shots in the contest against a tough Samford defense.
