PORTLAND, Ore. | The Alabama State University volleyball team dropped a four-set non-conference match to Fresno State University, 3-1 (23-25,25-20,20-25,18-25) on the opening day of the North Harbour Marriott Invitational Friday afternoon.
Briana Dorsey and
Payten Clark each posted 12 kills to lead Alabama State (2-2) in the first match Friday. Dorsey ended the day hitting .500 and added four digs, while leading the team with 16.5 points. Meanwhile, Clark finished hitting .375 and posted a pair of digs, while scoring 14 points.
Krysta Medearis added eight kills, while
Bayle' Bennett added seven in the loss.
Kori Kutsch paced Alabama State with 23 assists, while
Justus Tuiolosega added 16.
Bennett narrowly missed a double as she finished with 12 digs, matching the mark of
Ni'yesha Brown; while
Asha Daniels was in double figures with 10.
Stat of the Night
- For the second consecutive road match, Alabama State recorded more blocks than their opponent, 9-7.
- Alabama State finished the night hitting .152 with 49 kills, while Fresno State hit .201 with 52 kills in the four sets.
How It Happened
- The two teams traded points in the opening set until Fresno State took a 14-9 lead; however, Alabama State fought their way back into the set after being down by as many as six.
- The Lady Hornets closed the gap to four three times before falling late.
- Alabama State came back to win the second set after the two teams practically traded points through the first 18 of the set. The Lady Hornets pushed the lead to four at 12-8, following an attack error by Fresno State.
- Alabama State pushed the lead to as many as six, at 16-10 on a kill by Payten Clark; before pushing it to seven at 18-11.
- After Fresno State closed to within two (22-20), Alabama State scored the final three points of the set to claim the set.
- Alabama State took an early lead in the third set before Fresno State was able to come back to the lead at 15-14. From that point, they scored 10 of the next 16 points to go up 2-1 in the match.
- After Fresno State took an early lead, Alabama State was able all the way back and tie the fourth set at 15-all before Fresno State pulled away for the win.
