LORMAN, Miss. | After battling to a scoreless tie through the first 82 minutes of play, Alcorn State University and Alabama State University combined for three goals in three minutes. The Lady Hornets were able to get the last one on the night, scoring in the 86th minute for a 2-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Alcorn State.
"I am pleased with our ability to play the full 90 minutes to get the win in a physical game," Alabama State head coach
Jodie Smith said. "Offensively we created a lot of opportunities, we just didn't finish."
Alabama State (3-5, 1-0 SWAC) extended their conference-winning streak to seven consecutive matches, and kept their 11-match unbeaten streak in conference play alive.
Alcorn State (1-3, 0-1 SWAC) scored first when Alexandra Salvador scored her second goal of the season on set piece from the right corner, after Viktoriya Mihaylova assisted on the play. The lead was short-lived as Alabama State equalized on a
Lexi Krieger goal off an assist from
Teaggan Ilela in the 84th minute.
After a two-minute scoreless drought, the Lady Hornets got the game-winner on a goal from
Ariela Lewis as Krieger drove the ball down the left side and dumped the ball to the center for the goal from about eight yards out.
"On their goal we turned our brains off," Smith said. "They took advantage of our mistake to go up. I am really proud of the girls and the drive to come back and get two in the last few minutes. After we got the equalizer, Ariela (Lewis) was able to show real composure in front of the goal for the winner."
The Lady Hornets outshot Alcorn State 17-13, with 10 shots coming on goal for Alabama State.
Gianna Guyot, the reigning SWAC Goalkeeper of the Week, played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded five saves for the Lady Hornets.
Alabama State returns to action Sunday at 1 pm, continuing their road swing at Mississippi Valley State University.
