Hornets drop conference opener to Prairie View A&M

Alabama State struggled to move the ball offensively against Panthers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University football team was held to their lowest output offensively of the season as Prairie View A&M claimed a 34-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory Saturday night at ASU Stadium.

For the second consecutive week, both teams were held in the locker rooms for an extended period of time due to a weather delay, this week pushing kickoff back 21 minutes.

"Our guys didn't react well and that comes from youth and lack of leadership," Alabama State head coach Brian Jenkins said. "We did not react. Something went wrong and our guys just went straight down. Prairie View did exactly what a good team is supposed to do, we just didn't do anything out there tonight and that's disappointing because I know we have a good football team."

Alabama State (0-4, 0-1 SWAC) turned the ball over on their first two drives, but had their chances as they moved the ball into Prairie View A&M (1-2, 1-0 SWAC) territory five times which included a pair of drives inside the 20 that stalled due to penalties and turnovers.

The Hornets were held to just 127 total yards offensively in the contest, their lowest output of the season, which included 86 yards rushing and 41 yards passing. On the other side of the ball, Prairie View A&M gained 409 yards of total offense which included 234 yards rushing. Alabama State committed 11 penalties and turned the ball over three times in the loss.

Kobie Jones led the rushing attack for Alabama State with 30 yards on just five carries, while Anthony Jones, Jr. finished with 23 yards on six carries. Meanwhile, Jones was 9-for-14 for just 38 yards passing and was able to spread the ball around to 11 receivers on the night.

Sta'Fon McCray led all rushers with 104 yards on just nine carries, while Lavell McCullers finished 14-for-27 for 173 yards and a touchdown. Defensively for Alabama State, Jarkeith Ruffin and Devin Santana led the Hornets with six tackles each.

Alabama State enters an off week in preparation for Alcorn State University on Thursday night, October 5 at ASU Stadium on a game that will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
