Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Alabama State falls to Texas Southern Friday night

Lady Hornets outshoot Texas Southern in loss

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University women's soccer team dropped their first conference match of the season as they gave up a first half goal to Texas Southern University, and were unable to capitalize on their own chances in a 1-0 loss at the ASU Soccer Complex Friday night.

"I am certainly disappointed in tonight's result," Alabama State head coach Jodie Smith said. "We created a lot of opportunities, but we could get a goal. Our work rate and effort were good, and the girls did everything a coach could be pleased with. As a team, we made one mistake and it costs us a goal."

The mistake came in the first half when Paige Hayward was able to get to a loose ball in the box for her fourth goal of the season in the 33rdd minute to give Texas Southern (3-4-2, 2-0-1 SWAC) the early lead.

Alabama State (4-6, 2-1 SWAC) had several chances, especially in the second half, but could not capitalize as they ended the night with 13 total shots and six on goal. The Lady Hornets had several chances in the final minutes, including a pair of shots that missed wide and a pair that were saved by Texas Southern goalkeeper Tamryn Syron.

The loss ends an eight-game conference winning streak that dates back to last season, and a 12-game unbeaten streak in conference play dating back to October 7 of last year.

Alabama State returns to action Sunday against Prairie View A&M, with kick set for 1 pm at the ASU Soccer Complex.
