Hornets fall prey to big play Tuskegee

Alabama State puts up 376 yards of total offense in season opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State University put up nearly 400 yards of offense Saturday against Tuskegee, but it wasn't enough to overcome the big plays of the Golden Tigers in a 14-6 loss.

Darrel King led the Alabama State (0-1) rushing attack with 87 yards on 10 carries, while Alex Anderson added 54 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown. As a team, the Hornets finished the night with 194 yards on 34 carries, while holding Tuskegee to just 53 yards on 27 carries.

Kobie Jones earned the start in the season opener and finished the night 20-of-38 for 173 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 46 yards on 11 carries.

But it wasn't enough as Tuskegee used a 55-yard touchdown pass from Jamarcus Ezell to Peyton Ramzy, and a 46-yard fourth quarter interception return to seal the victory at ASU Stadium.

Alabama State had a chance to get on the board on their second drive of the first quarter as they took possession at their own 47-yard line with 9:22 to play in the quarter. They promptly drove the ball to the Tuskegee nine-yard line in just eight plays. After a two-yard gain to the Tuskegee seven, the Hornets missed a field goal with 4:44 to play in the opening quarter.

After being held scoreless on the first four drives of the game, including a missed field goal with 4:41 to play in the second quarter, the Golden Tigers were able to break the scoreless tie with 1:28 to play in the half. After a 13-yard first down run, the Golden Tigers used a 55-yard touchdown catch from Peyton Ramzy as he got behind the defense for a 7-0 lead.

The defense on both sides of the ball controlled the third quarter, with Alabama State holding Tuskegee to just 30 yards of offense in the period. The Hornets didn't fare much better in the third frame, as they were held to just 38 yards of total offense.

Tuskegee (1-0) built a two-touchdown lead with 10:57 to play in the contest, when Darryl Pearson, Jr. had his pass picked off by McCutcheon who returned it for 46 yards and a touchdown. However, Alabama State did not go away, marching 25 yards in nine plays in the final minute of the game to get on the board with a three-yard touchdown catch by Alex Anderson.

The onside kick attempt failed, and Tuskegee was able to run the clock out for the win.

Alabama State returns to action next week, traveling to FBS-member Troy University on Saturday. Kick is set for 5 pm.
